General Conditions Maldives
The North Male Atoll contains the more well known and surfed breaks of the Maldives. Because the breaks can be accessed so easily, the spots are prone to heavy crowds. The South Central Atolls including the Meemu, Thaa and Laamu and the Outer Atolls including Gaafu Dhaalu offer more than 30 world class reef breaks that are rarely surfed.

Occasional troublesome weather patterns with heavy storms during the months of May to November make it difficult to cross channels between the atolls and to operate surf charter trips without well equipped boats in this area. Logistical challenges of food supply and technical support add to the fact that only very few boats stay in this area for a longer period of time.

Our Teate offers safety standards and equipment that allow us to stay long time periods away from civilisation and cross open seas during all weather conditions. Therefore we can guarantee empty breaks. While it may happen that you will see another charter vessel during your stay you will have surf the breaks on your own.

Please note: There will be a resort opening close to the break of Blue Bowls. It is unclear when the resort opens and if it will affect crowd levels at this break.

Conditions Outer Atolls
Surfing in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll and the central Atolls offer world class days especially for the medium to advanced surfer. Most surfers who have done a trip with a boat or to a resort have been in the northern atolls. This part nowadays is pretty crowded as up to five or even more boats anchor on one break.
The Teate has chosen the isolated southern parts which are rarely visited by any of the surf charter vessels. The Atoll offers a great variety of spots on the east, south and west facing parts. While some spots are already well described there are still many spots unnamed and probably unsurfed.
The surf is usually a few feet bigger and than in the North Male Atoll. It offers waves for all levels, from barrel sections to long rippable walls. Pro level surfers are often underchallenged and are probably better off at some heavy breaks in Indonesia or similar set ups. The pure beginner will find the breaks to challenging as the reef bottom is to unforgiving. The guests having the most fun are usually the intermediate to advanced levels. Most reefs offer a range from challenging to relaxed setups where the surfer can dial in how much they want to take on. With many deep water breaks outside sections are very forgiving while inside sections can suck up and barrel heavily at low/mid tide. Wave size is generally 3-5 foot with occasional 6-8 foot swells that really light up the reefs.

Equipped with a dinghy and dhony we are able to bring you to waves suitable for your level of surfing independent of where the main boat anchors. The wind conditions can be fickle especially in the south facing parts of the atolls. There is always the option to move to the eastern or western facing parts to find smaller but well protected waves though.
And always remember no crowds are guaranteed during the good days! Overall you will experience 20-30% classic days, 40 -50% good days and about 30% low quality but still ridable waves. The weather during May to November is mainly calm sunny with occasional clouds. Every second day there is a chance of a tropical storm that lasts for a few hours.

The weather during May to November is usually calm and sunny with occasional clouds. Every second day there is a chance of a tropical storm that last for 2-3 hours.

The dominant wind direction is North West to south west so that there is either a left hander or right hander on east or south facing coastlines that is well protected and offers world class surf.
