The magnificent peaks of the Lizard Range in the BC Rocky Mountains tower over 7000 acres of private bowls, valleys and gladed forest. Our large and diverse terrain encompasses much of the Cedar Valley, the north end of the Lizard Range, all of Mount Baldy and the front and back slopes of Mount Fernie. At the heart of it sits Island Lake Lodge and beautiful Island Lake. Several of the runs can be skied right to the door of the lodge

Geisha Bowl
Geisha Bowl can be viewed front and center from the decks of the Lodge. Behold the splendor of one of our largest bowls and some of the world’s best back country skiing! Spanning from the dramatic Spineback Ridge to Faceshots Bowl, it might take weeks for a person to ski all the lines and years to learn all it’s intricacies! Photos of Scott Schmidt and Craig Kelly on classic lines in Tua East, Holy Land and Snowboard Heaven were made famous back in the day.

Hunters Bowl and the Bears
The Three Bears are some of the most recognizable peaks from Island Lake Lodge. They also provide very memorable skiing experiences. From the highest drop offs at Island Lake Catskiing, ski to the depths of the Cedar Valley for 3000 feet of vertical. Alpine bowls leading into perfectly gladed old growth forests make for magical runs. Some of the classic lines are Upper Hunters, Thirst Quencher, Nonstop and Stump Fluff.

Cabin Bowl
Cabin Bowl marks the east boundary of the Island Lake ski terrain in the Lizard Range. With great views down the valley and of “Orca Rock” this is the place to drop a few crazy chutes, catch some good tree skiing or ski to the valley floor when conditions are right! Classic lines include Cabin Drop to Cabin Corner or the skier’s right side of Aunt Matilda’s.

Lizard Pass and Wolverine
Northwest of the Lodge is Lizard Pass and the Wolverines. They provide a variety of skiing options from steep trees and long run outs, to a boot hike up Wolverine Three. Little Woody, Moraine and Siko Bowl are some of the classic lines that won’t be forgotten!

Faceshots
Faceshots is two drainage's west of the Island Lake Lodge. In the beginning, there were those that said “You will never get a cat road up that bowl”. We proved them wrong and regularly get great face shots! Ski over a bear den on the classic Faceshots Left line.

Mt Baldy - The Backside
North facing Baldy Backside is best known for its steep lines and cold powder. More than one guest has asked to sit out after looking out the door of the cat on the summit of North Baldy and seeing the pick up between their toes almost 2000 vertical feet below! The classic lines are Left Hook, Howling Coyote and Elevator.

Mt Baldy - Front Side
Baldy Front Side offers some of the best storm skiing at Island Lake, while bright sunny days offer incredible views. Run after run of ridgelines and glades can be had from the three peaks. With close to 2000 vertical feet, many runs ski right to the backdoor of the Bear Lodge. How about ending the day with Beer Run and a cold one at the base! Other classic lines include Sunny Side, Swiss Ridge and Sore Foot.

Mt Fernie
Mt. Fernie is the pride of our glading program; “The best tree spacing for skiing found anywhere” is often heard. Great skiing can be found on the north side of the mountain in the “cold high” and on the longer south facing runs with almost 3000 vertical feet on Hot Tub Chutes. Try some of the classics like 5 Star, Hot tub Chutes, Telifun and Tres Hombres!

ACCOMODATION

The Bear Lodge
The Bear Lodge is where it all started back in 1988. if these walls could talk, they would tell some amazing stories... Legends like Craig Kelly and Scot Schmidt sitting around the fire, talking about their "deep powder" day on the mountain. Today, the hub of the Island Lake Catskiing, The Bear Lodge is where you will experience après ski. Each day after skiing you will enjoy hearty homemade soup and fresh baked breads, with your favorite beverage from our huge selection of beer and cocktails. After dinner in the Tamarack, return to the Bear Lodge for a game of pool or darts - you never know, you might just bump into a legend...

Island Lake Catskiing provides you with 3 lodging options, from standard rooms to queen and kings size bed, in deluxe rooms with soaker tubs and showers. There are no TV’s or phones in the rooms, we want you to relax and enjoy the surroundings. However, if there is someone you need to say in touch with while you are here, all 4 lodges have wireless internet access, so feel free to bring your laptop. There is a guest computer and phone available for use in the Conference room.

The Tamarack Lodge - 8 rooms
The Tamarack Ski Lodge, built in 2005, boasts amazing views of the surrounding mountains. The 8 deluxe guest rooms have spacious ensuite bathrooms with a soaker tub, shower and a combination of twin and queen beds. The lodge also includes a spectacular dining room, a state of the art kitchen and our wellness spa facility with an outdoor hot tub offering great views of the Lizard Range.

The Cedar Lodge - 8 rooms
The Cedar Ski Lodge features 8 deluxe rooms including spacious ensuite bathrooms with a soaker tub and shower, queen beds and a deck off each room. The lodge has a workout gym where we offer morning stretch classes and an outdoor hot tub with great views of the Lake.

Red Eagle Lodge - 10 rooms
The Red Eagle Ski Lodge, built in 1996, is a cozy log cabin with two common areas, great for friends sharing a tour. The 10 comfortable guest rooms feature ensuite bathrooms with showers and new beds. The lodge has an outdoor hot tub on the large front deck with great views of the surrounding mountains.

Our dishes are brilliantly matched with an extensive and eclectic wine list. Collecting great wines from California, our neighbouring Okanagan, Europe and the new world, our 3000 bottle cellar is a proud representation of the quality we offer our guests. Island Lake Catskiing is putting our mission 'Best Wilderness Experience Possible' into practice. We own 7,000 acres of rare Rocky Mountain ecosystem. With this privilege comes responsibility. Here is a list of solutions that we’ve developed and implemented to promote environmental stewardship while balancing the needs of economic sustainability and profitability for our company.

Motorized Vehicles
      - All motorized vehicles restricted to the main roads. Off road use of motorized vehicles is prohibited.
      - Public snowmobile use on any of the property is prohibited
      - Hard surface parking area for staff and guest vehicles to minimize erosion.
      - Limited access to the property during off-season (spring and fall)

Waste Management
      - Double walled Enviro-Tanks to eliminate fuel spills.
      - Minimize packaging when ordering supplies.
      - Recycle waste where possible.
      - Septic system is a combination of aerobic (forced air) and anaerobic effluent field.
      - On-site laundry facilities use only phosphate-free laundry soap.
      - Recycle oil filters, fuel filters, waste oils and anti-freeze.
      - Supply reusable cups for guests while catskiing.
      - Regularly service and maintain bear proof waste containers for outside operations.
      - Bags for garbage disposal are a biodegradable, compostable plastic meeting ASTM D6400 standards.

Ecosystem Management
      - Monitor the water quality of Island Lake to ensure a healthy habitat for aquatic vegetation and wildlife, ranging from moose to cutthroat trout and bald eagles.
      - Cut alder and other shrubs in order to glade runs for skiing in a mosaic pattern that mimics natural wildfire, which provides a variety of age classed forests with a broad range of forage plants for wildlife.
      - Work with BC Parks to provide a buffer zone for wildlife that utilize Mount Fernie Provincial Park.
      - Be aware of the Provincial regulations and legislation for operations and set a high standard with respect to compliance.
      - Facilitate the work of scientists in the Elk Valley generally and more specifically in Cedar Valley.
      - Housekeeping cleaning products are certified by Green Seal, Envirodesic, Enviromental Choice and the European Union’s Eco-Label: The Flower, to have minimal impact on indoor air-quality and reduced human and aquatic toxicity. As well, these products have shown excellent biodegradability in aerobic and anaerobic environments.

Energy Use and Fuel Consumption
      - We produce all our electricity using a flow through, hydro generator on Breyanne Springs and Iron Creek.
      - Use diesel generator only as an emergency backup system.
      - Utilize energy efficient light bulbs and other energy efficiency planning & tools.
      - Encourage a conservation ethic amongst guests to hang towels to reuse again and wash bed linens only every 3 nights or on check out.
      - Limit set points of thermostats.
      - Incrementally replacing older 2 stroke snowmobiles with 4 stroke sleds for lower emissions, fuel consumption, low oil use, less sound pollution and fewer belt replacements.
      - Thermostats for the floor heating systems are throttled back during times of low occupancy to keep pipes from freezing.

Wildlife Management
     - Restrict access to sensitive species such as lynx, mountain goats, moose and grizzly bears during critical periods of their life cycle specifically during birthing, denning, and foraging.
      - Restrict hunting access in Cedar Valley that historically was open to hunting.
      - Prohibit trapping since purchasing the land in 1996.
      - Protect historical 'Cedar Valley Old Growth' forest & the integrity of this rare ecosystem and forest stand. The future of this reserve depends on the goodwill, conservation ethic and ecosystem management of the company.
      - Build winter/snow roads to offer moose an easy escape route when snow cats and snowmobiles are approaching to minimize harassment of the animals.
      - Protect undeveloped, low elevation habitat along Lizard Creek and populations of wintering ungulates.
      - Provide a wilderness refuge for animals pressured by Fernie's sprawling urban development and development at the base of Fernie Alpine Resort.
      - Hire professional biologists to assess environmental impacts and when necessary practices that will minimize the effect of activities.
      - Utilize appropriate construction methods and maintenance practices on the road to minimize siltation of tributary creeks harming fish populations in Lizard Creek.

Minimizing Human Impacts
      - Prohibit grazing of domestic livestock.
      - Developed a map of our trails, and built bridges and cairns to keep visitors on the paths, reducing the trampling of sensitive vegetation, especially in the alpine.
      - Instruct guests about wildlife behavior encouraging viewing from a safe, appropriate distance.
      - Practice and promote a "pack it in; pack it out" behavior so no evidence of visitors remain in the backcountry.

Education and Awareness
      - Develop a Wildlife Encounter Plan to notify guests and staff of recent wildlife encounters
      - Hire a professional team to improve communication skills, knowledge about the natural environment and cultural history of the area for our staff.
      - Produce a map of the property with interpretive text designed to educate visitors about the unique ecosystem and encourage respectful use of the land.
      - Incorporate educational activities for our guests during special events using local expert naturalists, biologists and environmental advocates.
      - Development of a purchasing policy whereby supplies and products are only purchased from suppliers who share our beliefs and commitment to sustainable business practices and the environment.
      - Joined the Hotel Association of Canada’s ECOmmodation Program to receive feedback on areas where we can improve our environmental initiatives and to help promote environmental ethics in the hotel industry.

Community Benefits
      - Purchase local and organic produce and products whenever possible.
      - Foster a supportive relationship with small businesses in the Elk Valley. Make it a priority to hire local sub-contractors, consultants, and promote other local tourism operators. Purchase materials and office supplies from local vendors and above all else encourage local partnerships whenever possible.
      - Maintain an open dialogue with community grassroots conservation groups like Wildsight, as well as other local organizations like the Fernie Rod and Gun Club and Snowmobile Associations to communicate management decisions, restrictions and openings when it is possible. This open dialogue strengthens relationships and builds mutual trust and respect.
      - Provide ample opportunities for local people to visit or bring friends and family for a meal, hike, or to enjoy our spa services.
      - Partner with the College of the Rockies Fernie Campus and Mountain Activities Skills Training (MAST) Program for programs and services offered on contract through many of Island Lake Lodge's professional guides and/or by providing access to the property.
      - Allow access to lands for Avalanche Awareness programs and education
      - Whenever possible hire local staff.
      - Support local community conservation efforts by displaying literature and cooperating with programs raising the profile or organizations like Wildsight, Y2Y, etc. to visitors and staff.

Safety
      - Have an updated safety plan in place including wildlife encounter plans.
      - Brief clients and staff on ways to avoid and handle wildlife encounters so as to minimize the risk to clients and protect wildlife.
      - Cleaning products are chosen based on low or non-toxicity and selected to improve indoor air quality and reduce toxicity.

Island Lake has partnered up with K2 and Burton to provide some of the best skis and Snowboards in the industry. With powder skiing as our goal K2 has fulfilled all our needs with the K2 GotBack, Side Stash and the Pontoon for the wild deep days. If snowboarding is your game, the Burton Malolo makes boarding easy in the powder. All skis and snowboards are included in the package at Island Lake and Powder Cowboy Catskiing! For guaranteed fit and comfort, it is recommended that guests bring their own snowboard bindings in good working order. There is a limited selection of bindings at the lodges.

Pontoon

Burton Malolo Snowboards
The Maolo is the board of choice for powder and all mountain boarding. The S rocker design helps maintain momentum through deep turns and variable conditions. This means more speed, control and maneuverability with less effort. Great edge hold and added strength are provided by the wood grain positioned along the toe and heel edges, perpendicular to the wood core.  Thinner sections of core between the bindings give softer flex and torsion making the Malolo ideal over a variety of conditions and terrain. A light nose, tapered shape and set back stance promote flotation and eliminates rear leg burn in the deep powder. Island Lake has an assortment of boards ranging from 149 cms to 166 cms in length.  We do recommend that you bring your own snowboard binding for the best fit.

CAT SKI PHOTO PROGRAMM
Island Lake Catskiing is proud to continue offering professional photography to all guests. For 2010 the team consists of Todd Weslake, Aaron Whitfield and Matt Kuhn. All our photographers have seen their images published around the world and work with their cameras year round.

A photographer will ski or snowboard with you for one day of your tour. This allows you to enjoy your day without worrying about capturing your own action photos of your friends on the slopes.

At the end of the day your photographer will head back to the lodge and set up a slideshow for you to enjoy during après ski. The slideshow will be on the big screen TV in the bear lodge (where you will enjoy your soup and bread).

All our photographers are strong skiers and snowboarders, you will hardly notice that they are there. The photographers are using the latest in digital SLR cameras and professional lenses for an exceptionally high quality image.

If you wish to purchase these high quality photographs, please do so on the same day before dinner time. You will be able to sit down with the photographer during après and order images while viewing them on the big screen TV or laptop computer. Please see the price list for our many options.

After a great day of Catskiing , a massage will soothe tight muscles, improve range of motion and prevent injuries. Let our professional staff ensure you feel your best for the next day on the mountain. We offer a variety of treatments that will appeal to skiers and non skiers alike, including wraps, exfoliations, aromatherapy, foot care, and a number of massage traditions.

Island Lake Health Spa features five treatment rooms, a wellness room with a deep Japanese soaking tub, retail boutique, change rooms and relaxation rooms. Take time before or after your treatment in our Solarium or Outdoor room with hot tub and mountain views.

We will customize our services to provide you with exactly what you need to create a productive meeting, retreat or tour. DIRECTIONS
Flights
You have three choices. If coming from the USA and looking for reasonable flights, you might want to consider Kalispell, Montana. From the airport, you will reach Island Lake in approx two hours by car. The closest major centre is Calgary, Alberta three to four hours away. The beautiful drive south through the Foothills of the Canadian Rockies is well worth the trip. If road travel is not your thing, then consider flying all the way to Cranbrook in British Columbia. Only one hour from Island Lake, it is the preferred choice for some. You can get to Cranbrook by connecting through either the Calgary or Vancouver airports.

Driving from Cranbrook   
From Cranbrook, BC - Distance 90 km (60 Miles) - 1 hour drive
The Cranbrook Airport is the closest airport to Island Lake Lodge. Domestic flights arrive within a one (1) hour drive. Rental cars are available in Cranbrook, or we can arrange for transportation for you and your group. Head northeast from Cranbrook on Highway #3/#95 towards Fernie. You will see the turn off to Island Lake Resort on your left after you pass the turn-off to Fernie Alpine Resort.

Driving from Kalispell
From Kalispell, MT - Distance is 177 km (110 miles) - 2 hr drive
The distance from Kalispell to Fernie is 100 km.For our American guests, domestic flights arrive within a 2 hour drive to Fernie. Rental Cars are available at the Kalispell Airport, or we can arrange van transportation for you and your group. To get to Fernie and Island Lake Resort, drive north on Highway #93. Cross the Canadian Border and continue until you reach Highway #3. Turn east on Highway #3 towards Fernie. You will see the turn off to Island Lake Resort on your left after you pass the turn-off to Fernie Alpine Resort.

Driving from Calgary
From Calgary, AB- Distance is 300 km (190 Miles) - 3.5 hour drive
Most major airlines and car rental companies service Calgary International Airport. The drive is a breathtaking 3.5 hour ride through the foothills and into the Rocky Mountains. Take Highway #2 South, turn west on Highway #7 and follow it to Black Diamond. Turn south onto Highway #22. You will eventually come to a T - intersection. Turn west onto Highway #3 which will bring you to Fernie. Continue through Fernie and along Highway #3 you will see the sign for Island Lake Lodge on your right.

What is catskiing? We access backcountry terrain with snowcats in order to ski or snowboard untracked snow. A snowcat is a large vehicle with tracks (resorts use them to groom runs), we put a large carrier on the back that holds up to 12 people. The inside of the carrier has comfortable seats, a stereo system and enough food and drinks for the day. This is a very comfortable and safe way to experience untracked powder in the backcountry and a "must do" for any skier or snowboader.

What is the average vertical I'll ski/board per day? A typical day is 10-14 runs, approximately 15,000 vertical feet starting at 9AM until approximately 4PM.

What is the best time of year to come to Island Lake Catskiing? Island Lake gets great snow from December through early April. Each of these months are different, but not necessarily better than the other. We can and do get 12-36 inches of snow over night in any of these months.

What do you do on bad-weather days? We go Catskiing or boarding! If you decide not to ski there are options like cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, curl up by the fire with a book or visit our full service Spa. Skiing/Riding at Island Lake is good to excellent most of the time. Conditions in the mountains can change dramatically overnight so do not despair if you hear discouraging reports shortly before your trip.

What is the name of the mountain range that you operate in?
Island Lake Catskiing is in the Lizard Range which is the Western slope of the Rocky Mountains in South Eastern BC Canada.

What is the annual snowfall?
This zone of the western slope of B.C.'s Rocky Mountains is a powder-making machine! The typical snowfall in our area is 900-1,200 cm (30-40 feet) per winter season. This results in a snow-pack of 300-400 cm depth in most of the valleys for most of the season. Island Lake Catskiing is located where the moist storms from the Pacific Ocean collide with the cooler Arctic air from northern Alberta. The result is consistent, deep dry powder from December to April which provides the ultimate experience to skiers interested in Canadian powder skiing.

What is the winter temperature in the Rockies?
Typical winter temperatures are usually -5º C to -15º C (23º to 5º Fahrenheit), but in mid-winter they can drop as low as -25º C (13º below Fahrenheit). These lower temperatures are what give us the super light, dry Rocky Mountains powder - the best powder skiing in BC. Our typically lower humidity makes the temperature feel slightly higher than the same level at higher humidity.

What clothing will I require?
While there's some opportunity to warm up in the snowcat after each run, be prepared to dress as if you'll be out in the elements all day long. Bring multiple layers of warm, non-restrictive, breathable and water-resistant clothing, including long underwear. BC's powder skiing requires a jacket with a "powder-skirt" and some good-quality powder gloves. High-quality, well-vented goggles and good sunglasses are a must. If wearing a helmet, use one with a low profile or 3/4 coverage shell with removable ear guards so you will be able to hear your guide. The key is: function over form. For evenings, casual wear (jeans or chinos) are normal. And remember your swimming trunks for the hot tubs, your camera, snowboots and sunscreen.

What is the skiing elevation?
Island Lake Resort is 4600 ft and skiing goes as high as 7200 feet.

What level of skiing/boarding is your terrain?
Intermediate, advanced or expert, Island Lake Catskiing has a diverse range of terrain for every level of skier or boarder. Your Catskiing experience could include high alpine, expert-level steep chutes and spines, breathtaking bowls, exciting tree runs or gentle rolling slopes with a variety of aspects and pitches. First-time catskiers or catboarders do not need to be experts to visit Island Lake but we recommend it for strong intermediates or better. Private snowcats are available for groups who want skiing or boarding tailored to their ability.

What if I get tired half-way through the day?
You are welcome to skip a run or two, have a hot coffee or tee tea in the warm snow cat – the driver always likes to have some company.

I've never experienced powder skiing before, how do I find people I'll be comfortable with?
To maximize your first BC powder-skiing/boarding experience, we'll attempt to place you with a group of similar ability. However we run 12 guests per snowcat and three snowcats so you should try, if possible, to travel in a group of similar ability or book a private snowcat.

Do I bring my own snow skis, or what type of skis can you provide?
You can bring your own skis, especially if they're a wide or fat ski. If you don't own fat skis, we highly recommend you use Island Lake's fat powder skis - the K2 Apache Chief, K2 Pontoon (limited) or K2 Phat Luv - which we provide free. We also have poles available for your use. You will need to bring your own ski boots. We do not supply boots and because checked baggage often is delayed or lost, DON'T FORGET TO CARRY ON YOUR SKI BOOTS FOR YOUR FLIGHT. We have a few K2 Tele skis with Linken bindings.There are snow shoes and cross country skis at the lodge available upon request as well as a variety of other things that you may need, (or have forgotten) at the lodge store.

Will my snowboard work for Cat-boarding?
For riding deep light powder a longer, backcountry board is an asset. Guests must bring their snowboard boots Most guests prefer their own bindings as well, with a stance set to the farthest-back setting. We have a good selection of Burton Malolo boards at the lodge; again many people still prefer to bring their own. For guaranteed fit and comfort, it is recommended that guests bring their own snowboard bindings in good working order. There is a limited selection of bindings at the lodges.

What communications are available at Island Lake during my stay?
There is wireless internet in all the buildings personal laptop use. The lodge also has one guest computer is the Bear Lodge. In addition 2 phones for guests are available for outgoing calls. Please have any incoming calls go through the Island Lake Resort Group at (250) 423-3700. Messages will be directed to guests at the lodge.

Where is Island Lake Catskiing located?
Island Lake Catskiing is located in the south eastern corner of British Columbia, 15 km from the town of Fernie. When traveling to Fernie be prepared for winter driving conditions. Maps and travel directions are available on this site under “Directions and Map” and are also provided in our confirmation packages. Daily road condition updates are available on the net. You can rent a vehicle or let us book transportation from the Calgary, Cranbrook and Kalispell airports. Please call for more information and reservations.

Where do I fly into?
Island Lake Catskiing guests have three great choices. If coming from the USA and looking for reasonable flights, you might want to consider Kalispell, Montana. Where would you recommend I go for a few days of warm-up before I visit Island Lake Catskiing?
Fernie Alpine Resort is a world class ski resort in the town of Fernie BC Canada only minutes away from Island Lake Catskiing.

Is tipping expected?
Tipping at Island Lake Catskiing is completely discretionary. Tips can be given to the general tipping pool or to an individual. On average tips are approximately 15% of your package price. Guests should be aware that cash is not available at the lodge. Catdrivers, Guides, Massage, Photo and Videographer staff are not included in the general pool.

Do I require insurance?
We strongly recommend trip cancellation, trip interruption and/or emergency evacuation insurance. We also recommend that all guests purchase travel or accident insurance. Your insurance broker can advise you about what other types of personal insurance you may require, such as disability insurance and life insurance.
