What safety aspects do I have to consider for heliskiing or boat travel surf trips?

Before you plan your trip we strongly recommend to consult your doctor. Surf and skiing trips are physically challenging. Your doctor is the best person (probably after you) to decide on your abilities to handle those challenges.

Helicopter and snow safety

The key to a safe and enjoyable day is to observe a few protocols specific to this activity. Here is a list of basic procedures based on the Heli Ski US Association´s recommendations. Basically, your guide will give you a complete briefing before flying.

• Attend and be familiar with the preflight, snow safety and avalanche transceiver briefing.
• Be alert and listen for guides instructions on how to safely approach, enter and exit the aircraft.
• Never raise you skis over your head around the helicopter.
• Squat in the safe area designated by your guide while awaiting helicopter arrival and departure.
• Make sure you have no loose items around the helicopter.
• Never chase any loose items around the helicopter. Let your guide handle it.
• Never ever walk uphill and away from the helicopter.
• Never walk towards the rear of the helicopter.
• Be careful while entering and exiting the helicopter, not to kick or damage any parts with your boots.
• Be alert and listen for guides instructions on how to safely negotiate slopes.
• Unless directed by your guide, always descend slopes one at a time.
• Keep an eye out for other members in your group.
• When on Glaciers, do not group up. Stay about 10 meters apart.
• Keep in mind that your guide is trying to provide you with a safe experience, don't get frustrated if you can't do all the slopes you wanted to.
• There is always the possibility of injury on the mountain. You must acknowledge that helicopter skiing have the usual dangers and risks inherent in the sport of skiing and riding, as well as additional dangers associated with back country skiing.
• Let your guide know how you're doing. If you are getting tired, let him know.

Surf boat travel safety

Surf boat travel safety is less of an issue than heli skiing. However, some rules have to be observed as well to get the most out of your holiday. Basically, please follow the instructions given by your guide. In addition please take into account:

• We respect and obey the surf etiquette.
• Always follow the instructions not only of your guide but as well of the boat captain.
• Living on a boat gathers a group of people not necessarily knowing each other very well on a small area. Respect and treat your travel mates as you want to be respected and treated yourself.

How do I get to the destination?
You are responsible to get to the local meeting point yourself at a given time. The local meeting point as well as the timeslot is defined on the product detail page within the section “Detailed Itinerary Description”. Most operator‘s have their meeting point at the next international airport and the transfers between the meeting point and the final destination are included.
Please carefully read the “Detailed Itinerary Description” of each trip on how to get to the corresponding meeting point and make sure to arrive at the given time. If in doubt, please contact us and we will clarify for you the meeting procedure.
Make sure you have all relevant visa.

Do I need any kind of special equipment?
Besides your basic sport equipment (surfboard, skies, gear etc) you do not need any special equipment unless the operator‘s offer does not include avalanche safety equipment for freeskiing trips. Please carefully read the description on the product detail page of each freeskiing trip and buy yourself avalanche safety equipment if not offered.
Don´t forget to make yourself familiar with the use of those products prior to your trip!

Luckily we perform our sport not inside sticky buildings. However, weather conditions sometimes heavily influences our ability to enjoy a day outside. Unfortunately most costs are fix and therefore can not be refunded. If costs are variable, refunds for non-operation of e.g. helicopter hours are given to a certain extend. Please carefully read the description on the product detail price of each trip to learn more about your chances to get refunded.
