Fuerteventura North Coast
Fuerteventura presents an arid, almost lunar landscape and is home to far more sandy beaches than the other islands. Strong winds are part of the deal, making this island a world-renowned windsurfing spot, but there are plenty of waves to be found in the calmer winter months. The north coast is packed with exposed reefs that pick up all the swells from W round to E and the waves range in intensity from the challenging tubes of Lobos to the mellow walls of Derecha de los Alemanes. The long west coast offers open, rock-strewn beachbreak that is offshore in NE winds but anywhere south of Cotillo is isolated and currents can be extreme. The far south has a couple of quality set-ups waiting for the right conditions but it is a long drive down and the chance of getting skunked is high. The east coast is surfed up near Corralejo where bright white sands cover some nice little reefs and beginners can get some space but if the NEÕer is blowing then the wind and kite rigs will be flying all over the place. Summer can get surprisingly big on the east coast and there is potential for exploration but it is usually onshore. The depths of winter are going to be the best bet when the wind is lighter and more E than N. Early starts are advisable to beat the wind and the crowds, while siesta time matches the strongest wind period of the day. Summer can still have some good waves at the west and east coast beachbreaks.

Bristol Playa
A large complex situated near the coast over the harbour side of Corralejo and just a 10 minute walk to the centre of Corralejo. It has a 24 hour reception, swimming pool, breakfast bar, pool bar, Salon bar(evenings), tennis, children's club. The apartments have a twin bedroom, bathroom, living room/kitchen and terrace. There is a microwave, television and telephone. There are ground floor, first floor and also some second floor appts. Plenty of parking space. Recently refurbished complex.

Playa Park Club
Complex of 142 appts on ground and first floor. There are studios, 1 bedroom and apts with a double and a single bedroom. the complex offers salt water swimming poools, pool bar, resturant, reception and also offer extras such as saunas, gym, internet and squash. the rooms all have telephone, TV and balcony or terrace. you can choose self catering, B&B or half board. Situated approx. half way between Flag beach and Corralejo Town centre and close to the attractive Campanario shopping centre.

Sol y Mar
This is a surf hostel which is basic accommodation but cheap and friendly. It is an old Spanish house situated in the centre of town. There are 8 bedrooms divided into singles, doubles, triples or quad to share, with communal kitchens (2) and bathrooms (2) and a lounge area which can be used in the evenings. There is space for board storage and a roof terrace for barbeques in the summer. Free WIFI available.

Magnolias 31

2 bedroom private bungalow on residential complex. This has 1 double bedroom, 1 twin bedroom, bathroom and living room/dining area/kitchen. The kitchen is fully fitted with hob (4), fridge freezer, oven, kettle, toaster. Living room has television (Spanish) and DVD player. There are extensive terraces and a private pool. Private car parking space. It is on the outskirts of town so approx. 1.5 km from flag beach and about 2 to 2.5 km from Corralejo centre.
Only available for rental from February to November. WiFi on request for 15€ per week, has annex that can sleep 2 extra people (6 maximum at villa), Hot Tub/Jacuzzi available all year around.

SURF COURSES

1 day (4 hours)
This is a beginner course of one day duration. You will spend a day with us learning elementary water safety and how to stand up on a surf board. We will provide you with an insight into surfing so you can choose whether you want to pursue it. The course will consist of a 4 hour session involving safety, paddling and standing techniques.

Beginner course (3 days)
It is our aim to have you standing after 3 days! In these 3 days you will learn how to stand up and primary water safety. We will spend 3-4 hours in the water everyday learning standing techniques, board control, paddling and wipe out survival!! In addition to that you will also be given theory lessons on types of breaks, surf board design, equipment, history and water survival and safety.

Intermediate course (3 days)
To join this course you will need to be able to stand up. It is our aim to have you catch and ride the green waves. In the 3 days you will be given specialised instruction on technique and skills according to your ability. We will be spending 3-4 hours per day in the water (in 2 sessions or 1 marathon surf depending on conditions). This will allow our instructors to correct any mistakes and work through problems that you may be having. You will also receive theory on reading the conditions, understanding swell as well as helpful hints from the Pros!!

 
5 day course
SURFING IS PROGRESSIVE - THE MORE YOU SURF THE MORE YOU LEARN... so we will be offering 5 day courses at both Beginner and intermediate levels. This will give our instructors a chance to give personalised tuition to individuals and help with the development of your own personal style. As with the 3 day course we aim to spend at least 3-4 hours per day in the water as well as relevant theory lessons depending on the needs of the group.

Corporate Events
At Flag Beach we offer courses in 4 sports (windsurfing, surfing, kite surfing & paddle surfing) and can cater for groups of up to 60 people per day. Whether it is a few hours, one day or various days we can arrange special events and corporate activity. We have multi lingual instructors many speaking 2-3 languages and most doing more than 2 sports.

Body boarding
Boogey Boarding is a fun alternative and not much experience is needed. The whole family can enjoy this sport, and the boards & clothing are easily transported. The body boarding is run on every day.

Body Board Safari
We take a group of not more than 8 people and go on a Boogey Board safari to one of the other beaches. The instructor teaches you how to catch the waves, and all the necessary tricks to start enjoying Boogey Boarding. All boards are supplied with wetsuits & fins.

Ben Thomas
Ben is the owner and manager of Flag Beach Windsurf Centre. He has lived on Fuerteventura for over 20 years and therefore knows the Canaries well. Ben is a qualified windsurfing and sailing instructor, speaks 5 languages and is a keen pilot in his spare time.

Flag Beach Windsurf Centre story

November 1987:
Ben Thomas manages to secure a licence for a watersports centre on a beach close to Corralejo. Everyone saying he was mad to open a centre "out of town" where people would have to travel to and that Corralejo Bay would be better. Originally known locally as Grandes Playas, it's now known internationally as Flag Beach.

February 1988:
A deal is struck with ALPHA, to supply boards, and the local NEIL PRYDE dealer for rigs.

April 1988:
The equipment arrives but the hut has not been finished yet.

May 1988:
The 4m x 5m hut is put up on Flag Beach and together with 3 - 4 people it is painted and prepared. The centre finally opens with 9 boards and 15 sails.

November 1988:
Centre changes to TIGA/NEIL PRYDE

June 1989:
An extension is added to store rigs and rescue boat. The total boards now being 22 with 39 sails.

Summer 1990:
TIGA/PRYDE out, FANATIC/ART in. Now 34 boards and 70 sails.

October 1990:
A further extension is built to house more boards/rigs and to give the lads more room to work.

May 1991:
The school is knocked down and all Corralejo beaches are "cleared" of all beach bars and any other constructions. In the meantime Flag Beach Windsurf Centre works out of a van to continue to provide service for customers

August 1991:
Finally after waiting for 3 months for a bit of paper we get the go ahead to build a new centre, back from the water. We have now been granted permission for a hut 19m x 6m. Work starts immmediately and continues day and night to get it finished. 5 Days later and we have a new hut.

March 1993:
Plans are put through for a second building, this time 12m x 6m..........and....... we are STILL WAITING!

July 1998:
Flag Beach Windsurf Centre celebrates 10 years and throws a Mega beach party for 1200 people, that goes on all night long.

August 98:
Kitesurfing is the new sport and Flag Beach starts hiring out equipment.

August 99:
Kitesurfing is an established sport and Flag Beach is one of the best places in the Canaries to do it. We now teach kitesurfing.

2002
Flag Beach become an IKO recognized centre

2003
We celebrate our 15th anniversary with a massive beach party, open air concert on the beach with some 2000 people

2004
We create a new surfing only division under the name of "Island Boarders" which are marketed differently to Flag Beach and we become BSA recognized

2007
We now employ over 20 staff for the 1st time and Island Boarders has expanded to 3 red Landrovers 2008 Flag Beach celebrates its 20 anniversary

Windsurfing in Fuerteventura
Flag Beach Windsurf Centre offers good cross-shore (from the left) conditions from March/April through to August/September. It is generally wavier for the first couple of months with the remains of the winter swells, however from May onwards the waves disappear and flat slalom conditions prevail.
Although the winter months statistically have less windy days at Flag Beach, there can be better locations within easy reach that have wind for the more advanced sailor.

We offer a wide range of tuition, from beginner up to advanced. Although Flag Beach is in fact an intermediate - advanced location, we are very lucky in that some 20 minutes drive away we have an ideal beginners teaching lagoon. All our beginner / renewal / improver courses run in this lagoon, where there is shallow (1m), protected water with a sandy bottom. This allows us to cater for everyone's needs.
All courses are run by qualified instructors, Flag Beach being one of the VDWS recognized centers.

With more and more girls wanting to learn surfing and kitesurfing we have this year decided to run a few special “girl only” weeks, and combine them with some extras like Yoga, a visit to one of the local Aloe Vera plantations and BBQ nights.

You’ve dreamt of white sand beaches, crystal clear water, warm weather and perfectly shaped waves; it’s not surprising that Fuerteventura has been called the “European Hawaii”.

Our surf instruction occurs both in the water and on the land, you will gain confidence in learning how to surf & kitesurf, understand and practice surf etiquette and see how surfing and kitesurfing is a metaphor for achieving your personal goals. Our instructors are highly qualified with 1000’s of teaching hours under their belt; they all hold current First-Aid and CPR training.

Girls Surf Camp

Flag beach is in the north of Fuerteventura on the road driving out of Corralejo. The wind is predominantly cross-shore and Flag beach is the start of some 6-7 km of white sand, where we have about 3 km for kitesurfing. The best months for kitesurfing are March to November. This is when the sea tends to be flat and the wind consistent. During the winter months it can become too wavy and though it might be good on the occasional day it cannot be guaranteed. We have a team of excellent watersports instructors who not only sail, windsurf, surf, dive and kitesurf but also speak 6 languages between them. You can also feel safe in our hands as Rescue facilites are always at hand for any situation that might occur.

During the winter months we have different wind directions like onshore, offshore etc and so the only way to guarantee course completion is by using a boat. All course are then taught regardless of wind direction and teaching from a boat gives us the flexibility to move around the island to the most suitable location.

Rescue Cover For Kiters
At Flag Beach we run a rescue cover service specifically designed for kiters.
We strongly advise all private kiters (people not hiring from us) to take out this rescue cover. For 30 euros you can have cover for up to 15 days unlimited rescues this also includes board finding service. Please note anyone needing a rescue and that does not have cover will be charged 100 euros for the single rescue. To get rescue cover either book it online before you come or pass by the centre on arrival.

Kitesurfing Courses
Courses are run on a continual basis with groups of not more than 4 people per instructor on the beach part of the course (day 1 of the beginner course)and 2 per instructor in the water. Most people have very limited experience of kitesurfing so book the beginner and waterwork courses but we can teach to any level as some of our instructors compete at international level.

Certificate / Licenses
We are an IKO recognized centre which means we teach to a certain standard and also means we can issue the IKO Kiteboarder card. These come in different levels depending on ability. There is also a booklet which is very informative which can be bought at the centre or online.
