General Conditions Panama
Panama joins Central America to continental South America via a thin isthmus of land blanketed in wild jungle and marshlands. It is severed by the amazing engineering feat that is the Panama Canal, which leads from the surf drenched Pacific coast to the great potential of the Caribbean coast. Panama feels like an uncrowded version of its’ neighbour, Costa Rica, plus there’s the added bonus of offshore islands to explore. It’s slightly less exposed to the North Pacific swells than Costa Rica but Panama does have a good window for W and S swells along with calm wind patterns. Although the country is not as safe for the travelling surfer as Costa Rica, there is an untapped selection of point breaks and the option of driving from coast to coast within 2 hours. The known spots in the Caribbean are around Colon or Bocas del Toro, with the western part of the country offering the best orientation for Carib swells.

Surf Conditions described by the Operator:

Panama Pacific Coast:
Panama is considered the uncrowded version of its neighbor Costa Rica. That’s for a good reason as it is challenging to travel on land. If you take on the challenge you will be rewarded with low crowd perfect reef breaks. There is also plenty potential on offshore islands that are most easily accessed by a surf charter vessel. The peak season is from April – October. Panama has spots exposed mainly to the south but also to the west. It picks up plenty of the south swell during that time. The off season is less big but still offers some great surf and consistency.

This is Surfing in Panama
Lost Coast has been surfing this area of Panama for over 10 years. We have over 1,000 days guiding Coiba National Park alone. No one knows this area better. Scoring here takes an extensive knowledge of the tides, wind, swell size, swell direction, and locations. Some of the spots fire in small swell when others are not showing at all. Other spots only fire during certain tides or take a big swell or unique swell direction. Rocks, reef, wind, and of course…open ocean swell all make surfing here fast and powerful. With 7 left point breaks, 5 right point breaks, 4 beach breaks and a handful of short slabby lefts and rights we have much to choose from for all levels.
Some of the points can be a ½ mile rides that you will never forget. Each day we start out with a plan based on tides, client requests and wind. We surf until the tide gets to low or high then jump to another spot 10 to 15 minutes away for the incoming to high tide or outgoing to low. Coiba is so exposed to the open ocean that there is always surf. Afternoons generally turn the wind onshore in some locations so we make another jump to where the winds are offshore at point breaks.
The upside to these constantly changing variables is that we surf alone. That’s right… Your group killing it all by yourselves. We are so certain you will surf alone we guarantee it! Logistics make this a difficult location for outsiders to reach and with limited knowledge of the area most likely a waste of their time.
Lost Coast uses our two 24’ sport boats to take groups to the breaks daily. These boats can transfer up to 6 guests and boards at a time. They are 5,000 pound aluminum boats with center console designed for serious offshore running. We cruise at 24 kts, which gets us to and from the breaks quickly. These boats are not pongas and the ride is exceptional. Both 24’ boats are also outfitted with offshore fishing gear, inshore fishing gear and snorkel gear. When you decide to end your day of surfing there is more good news, the fishing for Marlin, Sailfish and Tuna on the famous Hannibal Bank is only a 20 minute jump offshore! Catch some fish on the way home and return with fresh Sashimi for our chef to prepare.

Your group will be staying at the Coiba Island Ranger Station on the northeast side of Coiba Island. We will make all the necessary arrangements for you.

This location allows us to be in the center of the activities on Coiba Island. The ANAM ranger station was once Club Pacifico, a famous fishing lodge back in the 1970’s. The station has five large cabanas, each with two separate rooms that have six beds. The location was chosen for its perfect moorage, stunning white sand beach, turquoise blue water and beautiful jungle terrain. The cabins have stunning views, air conditioning, a sink, bathroom and a shower.

While you are staying at the ranger station, we encourage you to hike up a cleared pathway called the “Monkey Trail” which is named after the howling monkeys frequent the overhead trees along the path. There is also a bird viewing station near the cabanas that is within walking distance and available anytime to bird enthusiasts. A large white sand beach is the highlight of this location as it is the perfect place to grab a cool drink, sit in a hammock and allow our chef, Jose to cook a warm meal for you. There is a dining area and full kitchen at the ranger station, but don’t worry, Jose will do all of the cooking for you.

The Trip

Your group can join us at either Puerto Mutis or Santa Catalina to begin your trip. Our staff will transport you via our 24 foot fishing boats to the ranger station on Coiba. These boats are equipped with fishing, surfing and snorkeling gear and can hold 200 gallons of fuel each. We can safely travel throughout the Coiba National Park for up to six days at a time without returning to the mainland. This means that you don’t have to return to the mainland if you don’t want to.

Our guides have years of experience guiding in Coiba National Park and surrounding areas. The boats are fully equipped with all safety gear including VHF, GPS navigation systems, life jackets and satellite phone. Our captains are professional licensed captains that are also trained in CPR and first aid. Each captain and guide understands the fishing grounds, surf spots and all points of interest. They will help you plan your day while they take into consideration the weather, swell and current fishing conditions. We provide all needed fishing gear including fighting belts, big game and inshore fishing gear, lures and tuna tubes. If you have a particular piece of gear you would like to bring, please do so. We request that you bring your surfboards for surf excursions.

Surfing

Surfing is a must for beginners and experts. It is rare to find quality waves without anyone on them. Let our experienced guides take you to the right wave for you. With over 10 waves that we go to frequently, and an additional 14 locations that depend on swell size, wind and tides, there is sure to be one wave that is ideal for you. An Exotic Getaway
Join us off the coast of the exotic Coiba island as we explore the rich waters of the Hannibal Bank. Few areas in Central America are as untouched as these remote waters. For years, the Panamanian government has protected this area and the fish that reside here as a national park. This protection has ensured that commercial fishing operations using long line equipment and gillnets have not been able to enter the park's boundaries. The result is an area rich in aquatic and marine lifw that is difficult to find it today's tropical waters.

White Sand Beaches and Crystal Blue Waters
After an exciting day on the water, we encourage you to take a stroll on the many islands white sand beaches, or take our kayaks out in search of bottlenose dolphins and flying fish. The islands in this area boast on of the richest varieties of bird life in the world. Take a guided tour through the jungle on Coiba Island in search of leaf cutter ants, exotic insects, and the occasional sloth. You may even see howling monkeys or hear their call during the end of the day. Whatever activities you choose, your experience in Panama will be one you will not forget.

Cruising
Cruising in and out of the islands that separate the open ocean from inside waters on the west side of Panama is truly something spectacular. This is a place with white sand beaches and clear blue water, where fishermen still paddle out in hand carved canoes to their fishing grounds. This area is protected by the Coiba National Park and the Cerra Hoya National Park. Both parks are a refuge to birds, a variety of animals, reptiles, native flora and fauna, reef, and, of course, fish. Immerse yourself in the tropical experience and take a step back in time. This is the Lost Coast.

Snorkeling
Snorkeling in the park is something that should not be missed. You will see a rich variety of tropical fish, small reef sharks, beautiful corals and at times manta rays. Snorkeling with the whale sharks is also something that is possible given the right conditions. We have snorkeling equipment on the boats, ready for you.

Jungle Tours
In the Coiba National Park there is a spectacular jungle tour that is available to you at any time. You can do a half hour tour or does a full day hike through Coiba Island. Coiba Island has a multitude of indigenous species of plant life, animal life, reptiles, and bird life that you cannot find anywhere else in the world. The Smithsonian has a research center in the park that allows them to study these unique species. Please bring closed toed shoes if you would like to do this tour.

Ocean Fishing
The waters of Coiba National Park offer some of the best fishing in the world. During your trip, we will target cubera snapper and roosterfish, and will have opportunities at blue marlin, black marlin, and yellow fin tuna.

Inshore Fishing
With the use of a jet sled we can travel up rivers and fish estuaries with ease, so that you can cast flies or lures for all types of inshore species. Snook, roosterfish, snapper, and bonito are all a blast on light tackle.

Whale and Dolphin Watching
Blue whales, Humpback Whales, Pilot Whales, Whale Sharks, and many kinds of dolphin can be and are often spotted in the park. We encourage you to bring your camera on all outings!

Beach Tours
Any of the white sand beaches you see can be yours! The cabanas have a white sand beach out the front door. We can also visit Isla de Oro and other perfect white sand beaches if you would like. Bring an umbrella, the snorkeling gear and beverages and make it a day to remember.

Local Village Tour
We will pass by several small fishing communities that have no road access. Entering these small settlements is like stepping back in time. Witness groups of men hand carve their fishing canoes from whole logs. See people fish from the bank of a river with bamboo poles or casting line. Life in these villages revolves around the catch of the day.

Bird Viewing
These areas have a unique variety of bird life that can be viewed from the ocean or on jungle tours. Panama has over 10 birds that are endemic to Panama. Take advantage of your opportunity to see the rare Coiba Spinetail, which is not found anywhere else in the world.

Camilo Gomez: Owner of Lost Coast Tours / Captain / Guide.
Camilo was born and raised in Santiago, the closest major port to the Coiba National Park. He has spent the majority of his life at sea. Camilo began his career chasing Tuna off the Panama coast on commercial fishing boats but soon transitioned into guiding sport fishermen. He has a unique connection to the sea as he has spent his entire life in this area of Panama. Panama is his home and Coiba is his back yard. Camilo is an outstanding fishermen and Captain.

Vampiro Martinez: Professional Surf Guide / Waterman / New Surf Explorer
Vampiro was born and raised in Panama. From the heart of the city to the most remote point breaks Vampiro is known as a professional surfer and skateboarder who cares a great deal about his country, family and friends. The name Vampiro comes from his early years as a professional skateboarder. He was often spotted in the middle of the night by himself hucking over a rail or sliding a park bench over and over to get it right. People began to refer to him as Vampiro and the name stuck. (We won’t tell you his real name but maybe you can get it out of him). Vampiro has pioneered many of the remote slabs and breaks in the Coiba National Park with the crew of Lost Coast and continues to do so.No one has surfed and guided surfers in the Coiba National Park more than Vampiro, Period.

Chris Palle: Founder of Lost Coast Excursions / Captain / Surf, Fish and Free Dive Guide
Chris Palle has over 20 years guiding fishermen under his belt between the waters of Alaska, Colorado, British Columbia, Puerto Rico and Panama. An explorer, waterman, host, husband and father of two boys. Chris is a details oriented person with a calculating nature. He opened the door to these remote areas of Panama by launching his vessel the Lost Coast Explorer for charter service. Using the Explorer to literally live in the Coiba National Park for months at a time allowed Chris and the Lost Coast crew to watch the weather, swell, tides, fish migration patterns, annual rainfall and its effects on the water clarity, year after year. No one has knowledge and seasonal records of the Coiba National Park area like Chris. In 2009 BP contacted Chris to help them save an important stretch of Gulf coast shoreline during the Deep Water Horizon emergency. Chris and crew answered the call by steaming the Lost Coast Explorer from Panama to the Gulf. Chris and the LCE were instrumental in the protection of this important stretch of coastline. Lost Coast Crew purchased the business in Panama from Chris and continues to use his services as a host and guide.

Jose: Chef
Jose was born and raised in Santiago Panama. He now lives in the town of Montijo close to the Coiba area. A local in all regards. Jose is a husband and father of 3. An outstanding chef who pays close attention to timeliness and detail. His specialties are Seared Tuna, Lemon crusted Yahoo, Grilled Mahi, local rice dishes, pasta and of course… His signature chocolate flan. He does an outstanding job of preparing Panamanian cuisine with American influence. Like all the Lost Coast Crew, a one of a kind!

Coiba Island and The Hannibal Bank

Why Fish the Hannibal Bank?
History: For years, the surrounding islands were used by the Panamanian Government as penal colonies. The area was not open to tourism or recreation as the government kept some of their worst prisoners isolated upon the islands. Today this has changed. The prisoners have been removed and the area is now designated a national park and a world heritage site. For years, these prisoners kept anglers away from world class fishing grounds. These untouched fishing grounds are now available to you. Join Lost Coast Excursions as we tour through these waters catching the next grand slam.

Location:
The Hannibal bank is located over 50 miles from the Panamanian mainland. A boat ride here takes a minimum of three hours from most locations. The best way to access these areas is to cut out the commute and stay on the island in one of the parks cabanas. From the Cabanas to the Hannible Bank the run time in our 24 foot Aluminum boats is only 45 minutes. The Hannibal Bank goes from a depth of over 3,000 feet to 120 feet within 3 miles. This drastic drop off results in a huge upwelling of cool water, which provides the nourishment for baitfish. The baitfish congregate on the shelves drawing in the big Black Marlin that feed in these shallow waters. Giant schools of Yellow Fin Tuna chase baitfish on the surface and sailfish drive Bonita into a frenzy. The Hannibal Bank makes up a large portion of the edge of this famous shelf but is actually a small part of the overall edge that we fish. This 3,000 foot shelf runs from the Ladrones Islands to on outer island off of Coiba called Montosa. Jicoron is another outer island that we spend many days fishing off the edge of the bank. Due to the location of Panama the seas are generally calm with minimal winds. Because of these calm seas we are able to outfit boats to cover ground quickly. Our boats cruise at 24 knots and carry 200 gallons of fuel. We can cover some serious ground quickly! The 24 foot sport boats are designed for the avid angler that wants to hook and fight their own fish, stand up! You set the hook. You run the spread, You get 100% of the fight. Our crew is there to assist, but we encourage you to join in the action from rigging to hand line. The 24' boats are designed with an open cockpit, casting platform and center fighting platform. Why this design? So our guests can fight fish 360 degrees. They can cast plugs from three locations on the boat allowing multiple guests can cast at once. When we are in the big Tuna there is nothing better than throwing surface plugs with your friends! Once we hook them up you don't have to drag fish out the back like the standard offshore fishing boat. We let them run! So what if your buddy next to you hooks a monster that is driving for the bottom, keep casting. With some smooth jockeying of the boat we keep those multiple hook ups straight. Stand up fighting belts is the name of the game here. Anyone can pull on billfish from the chair. Go toe to toe with a 500 lb. Black Marlin. Now we're talking! Inshore fishing in the area is a must! The islands that surround the area are loaded with 20 - 70 pound Cubera Snapper, 15 - 80 pound Roosterfish, and some huge Amber Jack. Shark fishing is also outstanding for Bulls. We run 9 foot casting rods with 80 pound braided line to stop those big Snapper and Roosters before they dive into a hole or over the edge of a reef. You and friends get to throw 12 inch poppers that are weight loaded in and around the rocks just like fresh water Bass fishing only these bass will rip a spinning rod right out of your hands if you are not careful! Wahoo and Dorado also abound in these inshore waters, often times in unbelievably shallow water allowing some fun light tackle action.

All our boats are professionally outfitted and provide your group with top quality fish finders, GPS and VHF Radio. Guides are experienced, bilingual, professional licensed captains. We use Penn spinning reels and Shimano 50s on the stand up gear. We have it all covered for you.

• You need a passport only (no visa) to enter and exit Panama
• Panama has a stable democratic government that has elections every four years.

Panama has a population of over 2.8 million people and near 52 percent of the population lives in urban areas such as Panama City and David. The country is under populated with large areas of farmland and jungle spanning throughout the country. Panamanians are pleased to see foreigners moving to their country. They enjoy meeting and learning from new people. They will most often help you in any way they can, and are not afraid to put aside their schedule to help you.

Language:
Panamanians often speak two or three languages, have impeccable manners, and dress nicely every day.

Religion:
The predominant religion in Panama is Roman Catholic, but there is no prohibition against practice of any religion.

Drugs:
Illegal drugs of any kind are not tolerated in Panama or while on one of our tours. Panama has some of the strictest anti-drug laws in the world and the consequences if you are caught with these in possession are very high. If you are found with drugs onboard you will immediately be dropped off at the nearest port and your vacation will not be refundable.

Parque Nacional Coiba:
Parque Nacional, a new world heritage site, is one of the largest marine parks in the world. The island at the center of the park, Coiba, is Panama's largest - a massive 493 square kilometers. It is also home to the second-largest coral reef in the eastern Pacific Ocean. The waters are filled with very large fish and mammals including humpbacks whales, dolphins, Orcas, whale sharks, manta rays, rooster fish, amberjack, big snappers, three kinds of marlin, moray eels, and white-tip, hammerhead, and tiger sharks. Sharks and mantas are especially common, and sea turtles are seen regularly. Visibility fluctuates with the currents and seasons, but averages between 30 feet to over 100 feet. Even when visibility is low, you are likely to see some impressive creatures. The richness of marine life off the shores of Coiba is denser with species than anywhere else in Central America according to UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre. The diving here has been described as a cross between that off the Galapagos Islands in Equador and Cocos Island in Costa Rica. Coiba itself is still mainly covered in virgin forest. This lush jungle is home to 36 species of mammals, including howler monkeys, and dozens of amphibians and reptiles. You're much more likely to come across beautiful birds, however, of which there are about 150 known species. Coiba is just about the last stand in Panama of the gorgeous scarlet macaw, which are concentrated in an area called Barco Quebrado. Other impressive birds common on Coiba include the bicolored hawk and the enormous king vulture. Coiba also has several endemic species, including the Coiba spinetail (a bird - Cranioleuca dissita), Coiba agouti (Dasyprocta coibensi), and a local variety of howler monkey (Alouatta palliata coibensis). Coiba attracts visitors largely on the strength of its world-class surfing and deep-sea fishing and natural beauty.
