Northland
A bit like South Africa, many surfers write off New Zealand as a surf destination because it’s too far or too cold. The cold argument doesn’t hold for Northland, where clear, warm sub-tropical waters wash both sides of a peninsula that benefits from a near 300° swell window. Any pulse from SSW all the way round to SE will hit countless uncrowded beaches, points and reefs. Northland is relatively narrow and at the widest point it’s less then 1 hours drive from east to west. The Twin Coast Discovery Highway leads to most of the surf locations so it’s perfectly suited to campervan touring. Piha was the birthplace of NZ surfing, introduced by two Californian lifeguards, Rick Stoner and Bing Copeland.

Taranaki
New Zealand plunges far into the Southern Ocean and feels the full force of the Roaring Forties swells that march out of the deep. The North Island of the country is an easy place to visit, receives some classic waves and yet it is still relatively untapped by travelling surfers. Closer to the capitol Auckland, is New Zealand’s most famous wave; the super long, perfect left point of Raglan. Another 5hr south is the Taranaki area and the host of waves that fan around the base of Mt Egmont from Waitara in the north to Hawera in the south. This area gets the most swell and has the greatest concentration of quality spots on the North Island. There are a few surfers around who like to protect their secret spots, but there is a lot of breaks and plenty of scope for exploration.

Gisborne
With nearly 3,500km (2190mi) of coastline, there are many areas to check on the North Island. On the east side, there are up to 8 surf regions: Northland, Coromandel, Bay of Plenty, East Coast, Mahia, Hawke’s Bay, Wairapapa and Wellington down south. Gisborne can get a bit too busy in summer, but further north towards East Cape, less crowded conditions quickly become apparent. Despite the endless pointbreak lefts of Raglan to practise on, many of New Zealand’s best competitive surfers come from the Gisborne area, because what it lacks in primo surf spots, is more than made up for by its consistency. Although the Gisborne zone surf is smaller and generally cleaner than the west coast, don’t think that it’s any less powerful. Above average surfer density combined with quality spots, conveniently hidden amidst the sunniest and most untouched part of New Zealand, gives rise to Gisborne’s reputation as the surf capital.

Mahia Peninsula
The Mahia peninsula is located on the east coast of the North Island, between the cities of Gisborne and Napier. The peninsula is a beautiful, hilly promontory, with isolated golden sand beaches and wonderfully clear water. It has a flexible array of reefs, points and beaches, which between them will catch any swell direction going. The predominant SW winds are perfect for many of the exposed spots plus somewhere will always be offshore, no matter what the wind direction. It attracts people from all over the country to take part in the numerous outdoor sports that this area is suited to, yet there are no hotels, resorts or amusement parks and everything remains truly wild. The laid back, country feel is somewhat tempered by localism, so a low profile attitude is needed.

1 Day Tour
Our one day tour is all about a fun safe day at the beach. This includes; surfing, swimming, beach games and if we’re in the right location, you can even take on the challenge of the 10m water jump!
Our day tour caters to everyone from beginners who have already had lessons to advanced surfers. It includes return transport from Auckland plus surfboards and wetsuits. Lessons are not included but it does include supervision. This is perfect for those who are not yet confident to surf alone. If you would like lessons please check out our surf school or join our very popular 5 day or 12 day surf tours.
We travel to either coast looking for the best surf conditions. We have surfboards specifically designed for the new surfer and also carry performance boards for the more experienced surfers, board sizes range from 6’ to 10’.

• Pick up times, one departure per day depending on the tides (7:30am, 10am or 12:30pm).

The 5 Day Tour is a surf surfari for beginners to advanced alike. Our custom tailored surf wagon gets you on the beach to remote locations where you can learn to surf in uncrowded conditions. Our tour takes us to the sub-tropical waters and climate of the winterless North, which offers a variety of waves to suit all abilities.

Adventure Activities:
Ahipara is an adventure playground! You can swim, walk along the beach, play golf, go fishing, go mountain biking, sand boarding or take a quad bike tour. To be honest surfing twice a day will burn you out. If you have the energy or want to take a day out from surfing there are plenty of options.

Daily Itinerary:
There are always surprises and last second detours on this trip. Tangaroa and Tawhirimatea, (the gods of the ocean and the elements) ultimately dictate our itinerary. Surfing is all about tide and weather conditions hence the flexible nature of our trip. We base ourselves at Shipwreck Bay and head out every day chasing the best waves northland has to offer.

Day 1
- Kia Ora, Welcome. The search begins departing Auckland we head to the far north (Ahipara Surf Lodge). Today we have 1 surf.

Day 2
- We will find the best waves in northland. This could mean driving on the beach to get you to secluded surf locations. 2 surfs today.

Day 3
-We either surf in front of the lodge on the west coast or take a short drive to the east coast. Surf 2 coasts in one day!

Day 4
- More of day 2 & 3. By evening our surf pilgrimage will bring us back to Ahipara Surf Lodge for our fianl night. 2 surfs today.

Day 5
- Back to Auckland chasing waves on either coast. We arrive in Auckland late Friday afternoon. 1 surf today.

Bonuses: Sunsets, dolphins, whales, wild horses, perfect waves just to name a few.

General Information:

• Tours depart Auckland every Monday from Oct to May.
• We are limited to 10 seats and most trips book out so please book early! First come first served.
• Departure time on Monday is 10am from under the Big Boat in the Viaduct Habour. You will be sent a map when booking.
• Return time on Friday is normally around 5pm.
• Most of our customers are aged between 20 & 35. The minimum age is 16 and all customers under 18 years of age must complete a Student Registration Form and a Conditions of Booking Form .They can then either be faxed, emailed or posted back to us.

The 12 Day Tour is essentially an extension of our 5 day surf tour. We've had so many people do back to back tours and comment that they would like to stay longer! Now you can save money, stay longer and develop your surfing skills.
How does it work?
You join our normal 5 day tour departing Monday and instead of coming back on Friday you have 2 free days (Saturday and Sunday) at Ahipara Surf Lodge. You will then meet up with another 5 day tour on Monday and return the following Friday. On Saturday and Sunday you can surf in front of the lodge or take a day or two from surfing and enjoy the comforts of home. Food is provided and you are free to cook up what ever you like.
Most of our customers are aged between 20 & 35. The minimum age for this tour is18 years as you may have the lodge to yourself during your free 2 days (Sat & Sun).

Our Custom and Private New Zealand Surf Tour options are for the surfer who wants the ultimate freedom and the best NZ has to offer. This will give you the flexibility to chase waves around NZ and get you to those spots you would never reach without our guidance.

Whether you’re an advanced surfer or just want to find the best waves NZ has to offer, this tour is for you. New Zealand’s coastline is constantly pounded by swells from all angles and different wind directions. At any particular time there is almost always a good wave to be had somewhere. This leads the serious surfer that’s hunting for the perfect wave on a surf pilgrimage up and down the country. You may be in one part of the island for 2-3 days and then the wind shifts and your back on the road searching for another perfect wave. Our guide will find point breaks, reef breaks, river bars and beach breaks that best suit your ability. The original surf tour company of NZ
The story begins back in 2001 when New Zealand Surf Tours (NZST) was established as New Zealand’s first surf tour company of its kind.

NZST identified a need in the market for beginners wanting to learn to surf and for international visitors wanting to experience New Zealand waves. NZST evolved over the years originally offering a One Day Tour. The company now offers Five Day Surf Tours, Surf Schools, Heli Surfing and Custom Tours. The tours cater to beginners, intermediate and experienced surfers that are searching for a real kiwi surf experience. .

In 2004 it was a natural progression for NZST to take on the winter months and offer skiing and snowboarding tours to the North Islands infamous Mt Ruapehu. This lead to the re-branding of the company name to New Zealand Surf ‘n’ Snow Tours. Our Snow Tours offer skiing and snowboard packages to suit all levels (beginners to advanced) at reasonable prices. From standard accommodation and transport packages to custom tours including lift tickets, lessons and equipment hire.


Our Kiwi Crew
Our Instructors, Judd, Kane, Rangi and Dave have been surfing the beautiful beaches of New Zealand since their childhood days. 1 Day Surf school
For beginners who are new to the sport of surfing. It is very important that you understand the dangers at surf beaches. You will learn the fundamentals of surfing, surf safety and surfing rules.

2 Day Surf School
Over the 2 days you will learn the fundamentals of surfing, surf safety and surfing rules. This course includes 4 lessons and will get you on your way to progress to intermediate stage 1.

Intermediate Surf Lessons
We believe that once you get to this stage the training needs to be more personalised. You will probably only need a few lessons until you have enough confidence to go away, practice and reach the next level.
These lessons operate on a 4 to 1 basis with an instructor in the water with you at all times. The surf conditions need to be a perfect 1-3ft. You will be added to our Intermediate data base and contacted a couple of days before hand when the conditions are right to see if you're available.

Intermediate Stage 1
For people who have mastered the art of standing in the white water. Our intermediate lessons are mobile giving you access to the best learning conditions on the day.

Course includes:

• Paddling out back
• Introduction to green waves
• Ideal point to catch the green wave
• Green wave take offs
• Transportation to the beach with the best surf conditions (1 to 3ft) within a two hour radius of central city Auckland.

Intermediate Stage 2
For people who can drop into the green wave. Our intermediate lessons are mobile giving you access to the best learning conditions on the day.

Minimum Age

• 10 (Younger kids are welcome but an adult will need to attend).
• If you are under 18 years of age you must have a parent or guardian complete a Conditions of Booking Form when attending our 1 or 2 day surf school. Please print this form and bring it along with you on the day. Your parent/gaurdian can also sign the form on the day.

5 day Learn to Surf Camp
Ideal for kids who really want to progress with their surfing!
This is the ultimate in surf coaching! Our instructor will work with the kids every day to ensure their safety and make sure they are progressing to a good standard so they enjoy their surfing. The kids will be surfing every day in conditions that best suit their ability. Parents are welcome, and this is a great way for the whole family to learn to surf.

Learning to surf is all about

1.  Having access to the right equipment, which we provide.
2.  Finding the waves that best suit your ability.
3.  Being given the right instructions and coaching.

Most of the kids are beginners and progress extremely fast. We have many kids that have been on this trip a number of times and are now intermediate surfers.

Where do we go?
Our tour heads north for the simple reasons of the sub tropical water and climate, the remote and unspoiled beaches, and the consistency of the surf due to the proximity of the 3 coasts (North, East, West). The surf up around Ahipara is ideal for learning to surf, and there is always a good learning wave somewhere in the area.

Why would you come with us?
We have our own exclusive lodge (Ahipara Surf Lodge) which is located right on the beach in Ahipara. In front of the lodge is a very good consistent beach break, which offers great learning and longboarding waves. We have been running these trips for 7 years, you won't find better!
Product Detail

We provide:

• 5 days surfing
• 4 night's accommodation, dormitory style at Ahipara Surf Lodge. (Upgrades available: Twin $25 per night/per person, Double $50 per night/per room).
• 3 fresh meals daily. Vegetarians no problem. (Lunch on Monday and Friday while in transit is at your own expense).
• All transportation. Pick up and drop off from central city Auckland.
• Surfboards, wetsuits, and accessories. Body boards (by request).
• Daily Surf Lessons (we are normally in the water for 2 hours per surf).
• Surf safety, learn about rips, holes and undertows, how to identify them, escape them and use them to your advantage.
• Beach activities.

Daily Itinerary:
There are always surprises and last minute detours on this trip. Every day we will chase waves on either coast depending on the wind and swells, the only fixed part of the itinerary is the set accommodation spot at Ahipara Surf Lodge.

Day 1
Kia Ora, Welcome. The search begins departing Auckland we head to the far north (Ahipara Surf Lodge). Today we have 1 surf.

Day 2
We will find the best waves in northland. This could mean driving on the beach to get you to secluded surf locations. 2 surfs today.

Day 3
Wake up, have breakfast and then we may surf in front of the lodge. 2 surfs today, some may have 3 if you have the energy!

Day 4
More of day 2 and 3, by evening our surf pilgrimage will bring us home for our final night at Ahipara Surf Lodge. 2 surfs today.

Day 5
Back to Auckland chasing waves on either coast. We arrive in Auckland late Friday afternoon. 1 surf today.

Bonuses

Sunsets, dolphins, wales, wild horses and dune boarding just to name a few.

Water Safety
Over the 5 days the students will learn about surfing etiquette and surf safety.

They will have a good understanding of:

• Who has the right of way on the wave and drop ins.
• Rips and how to escape them, identify them, and use them to your advantage.
• Tides and the effect they have on the waves.
• Different types of waves, beach profiles and different breaks.
• Different wind condition, offshores, onshores and costal sea breezes and the effect it has on the surf.
• How to read weather pattens, what causes the surf and the formation of ocean swells.

 
Risk Management & Guides
NZ Surf Tours has a thorough risk management plan in every vehicle, which covers the different types of risks; dangers, risk management strategies and emergency plan procedures. All our guides are fully qualified and hold a minimum Surf NZ endorsement of Level 1.They have been trained in Surf Safety and hold current First Aid certificates for your safety. They have extensive local knowledge which allows them to find quality waves and give you a surfing adventure that you will never forget.

 
What to bring:
Personal items, sunscreen, sunglasses, towel, spending money, and lots of energy.

 
General Information

• Tours leave Monday 10 am from under the Big Boat in the Viaduct Habour. You will be sent a map when booking.
• We return Friday around 5pm.
• Tour groups are a maximum of 10 so be in quick, first come first served.
• Our surf season runs from approximately October through to May.

 
Minimum Age 13. Younger ages may be accepted if accompanied by an older sibling, mum, dad or gaurdian. We will also accept younger ages for school trips. All students must complete a Student Registration Form and a Conditions of Booking Form If you would like us to post them to you please let us know. They can then either be faxed or posted back to us.
These forms need to be signed by a parent or gaurdian whose kids are under the age of 18. You need to declare any medical conditions you may have as well as any disabilities. We also need to know about vegetarians and any food allergies you may have.
