Surf Berbere Surfcamp

Despite its North African location, Morocco is very much a part of the European surf trail. Located between 20° and 35° latitude with a NW facing coastline, Morocco has all the key elements for an outstanding surf destination. The Tarhazoute area in the south nestles behind a big cape, which funnels the predominant north winds into an offshore direction. The spots are all easily accessible by road with the waves generally breaking right over flat rock and sand. With balmy winter land temperatures, cheap living and a fascinating cultural diversity, Morocco is a must for the European surf traveller. Taghazout has enjoyed legendary status for decades, as a place to escape the winter blues and surf the great pointbreaks clustered around the famous Anchor Point. Known as 'Madraba' in Arabic and called 'Ikhflout' in the local Berber tongue, Anchors (or Ankas) has the ability to hold huge size and break down the perfectly angled headland for over a kilometre. The warm, green walls are powerful yet accessible to intermediates and provide a relatively safe environment for less accomplished surfers to improve their pointbreak skills, at least when it is small. Just to the north, past the reefs of Mysteries and La Source is another great, righthand pointbreak called Killers. It is this concentration of quality that has attracted surfers to this mellow fishing town, which is now showing the signs of development and ever increasing numbers of surfers and surf camps. There are more waves in town like Hash Point and Panoramas, then miles of beginner beachbreak running south to Banana Village at Tamrhakht. A few reefs, including a rare left, complete the picture towards Agadir, where there are more local surfers. Winter is the only time to go because the bigger swells are needed to get into the series of headland protected bays that make this area so good. Anchor Point often sleeps from April to October, although Killers will break on much smaller swells. The N/NE winds get bent and funnelled offshore by the coastal ranges, but in summer there are more NW onshore winds to contend with.

Hash Point
Right on our doorstep! This fast right-hander works well with a medium to large swell when the sand lines up well off the rocks. This is a favourite with the locals who run down after school to hit the lineup. Our roof terrace offers superb viewing for this fun little spot. If you catch a good one you end up on the Taghazout village beach where you can wander up and enjoy a freshly squeezed orange juice in Café Sonia.
Hash Point, this wave really is located RIGHT on our door step! enjoy some mellow surf here with the locals. Hash Point got its name over people being lazy from smoking too much hash and couldnt be botherd to walk to the point.

Panoramas
A nice beach break often overlooked, but producing some good barrels and less crowded than some other breaks. When there is a huge swell rolling in, the sheltered breach break is a safe place for beginners to learn. There is a right hander point break at the end (again we can see it from the roof terrace at Surf Berbere).
One wave to remember, this is Panoramas with its fast hollow sections you are sure to get a good rush at this place, also know as a fantastic spot for begginners on the higher tide.

Devil's Rock
Situated south of a small rocky headland and just five minutes drive from our Hash Point surf camp, this hollow right hander breaks towards Banana Beach. Great for starters offering punchy lefts and rights with a mainly sandy bottom. It is here that we run our surf school with Immourane Surf Club for all the local kids. They also have a great café that will prepare you a feast. Try the fish kebabs – awesome fleshy fish with a plate of chips.

Banana Beach
A long right hander breaks from this small beach, often sheltered from the Northerly winds; it provides an all level wave more consist at low tide. When you have finished up on this wave you are a hundred yards away from Banana village. This little town is famous for its tajines (sometimes with bananas chucked in for good measure).

The KM's
North of Agadir are several spots given their names in km’s by the distance they are from the city. The breaks of 11 and 12 have fast and tubular rides on the low tide, with a softer break at 12 however dotted with a few boulders in the shore break. Often popular with body boarders due to the quick break. You have to share these breaks with a Saudi Prince and the King of Morocco; both have their palaces just next door.

Anchor Point
First surfed by Australians in the 1960’s, this world class break lights up when a medium to large NW swell is present. An endless succession of speed walls and cutback hooks present themselves with a more sandy section down the point offering occasional green rooms. Working well on all tides, it also can give the opportunity to ride back into Taghazout when it is huge. On the really big days, we watch the guys take off at Anchors, get off and drift in front of our Hash Point apartments, attempt another massive take off and speed you way past Panoramas. Last March of about fifty guys that tried this feat only two managed to pull off all three sections. There is a challenge if ever you needed it. If the point gets busy there is plenty of room to spread out down the sections and enjoy this fine break.

Mysteries
This beach break combines with a shallow reef section to provide a deceptively long wave with barrels. The right hand section provides a nice ride especially on the incoming high tide, with a larger back section working well on a NW swell. Just be careful that you don't get sucked down into this beast as it rears up over the reef.
Mysteries, the name says it all! this wave seems to stand any size and holds its shape every time!

 
La Source

Fresh water springs bubble up from the onshore rock formations forming ‘the Well’ providing performance walls and a high lifting A-frame perfect for all levels of surfing abilities. On the push on a small swell the right handers hold up towards the cliffs while the rarer lefts break out towards the beach section. Small reef sections combining with sandy sections provide a clean wave mostly.
Enjoy a large range of breaks from points to slabs to perfect reefs.

 
Killer Point
Renowned point break named after the visiting pod of Killer Whales occasionally. This is probably the most consistent of the point breaks in Taghazout. At low tide on small swells, the peak in front of the cliff provides a short left and a sectioning right. As the swell picks up, vertical walls rumble down the point providing barrels and hard sections. On high tide, the inside section fires up as it is sheltered from the Northerly winds. Always bigger than it looks from the cliffs this is a great break. At low tide you can avoid the long paddle out if you scamper round under the cliffs and rock off. Definitely better than using up your energy paddling out. All of the breaks so far are within walking distance from the Hash Point apartments. The luxury Killer apartments look out to Mysteries, La Source and Killer Point.

Draculas
Vampire teeth shaped rocks give the name to this big swell handler. A fast right hander pushes some punchy often large sets definitely not for the faint hearted. Known as Boilers evil twin!

Boilers
If it big you want then big is what you will get. Winds funneling from the mountains offer large vertical lips and speed walls, and this powerful right hander washes onto a strong shallow reef. If not with the surf berbere guides, this is a lot easier if you have a buddy ready to tell you when to rock off behind the ship wreck, looking on from the shore. Get ready to scamper across the reef on your way out before the next set hits. Often visited by pro photographers for the intensity of pictures available, awesome spot!

X Spot
A series of consistent reef breaks, often lifting up some serious waves when the wind conditions favour. This is known to the locals as a secret, the journey from the cliffs makes this section a rewarding wave, not to mention the fact that no one else will be surfing it with you. This is surely the reason to head to Surf Berbere here in Africa for your surf trip and enjoy it to the maximum.

Tamri
This ultra consistent beach break is the place to go when Taghazout is flat. Quick back sections pay privilege to an even more constant beach push, strong currents at times but a fun ride all the same. For beginners just be aware how far you have drifted down the coast. The lush estuary is home to camels and flamingos, a truly wonderful spot.

Imssouane
This highly consistent right hander offers one of the longest rides in the region. Firstly, the most Northern point Cathedrals, a quick wave rising on the reef breaking right into a good sand bank section with several defined peaks. The harbour side offers a break from the pier to the beach of over a few hundred metres. This long mellow right keeps wrapping into the well protected south facing bay. If you don't like paddling out, this is the place for you. You walk out to the wave from the port and then you jump on jump off this wave till the end of the bay (like a London bus) and then all you have to do is walk round to the start again. If you head up to Immesouane be sure to pop into Momo's surf shack. He'll sort you out with a nice mint tea!

Our Surf Berbere surf camp is located in the sleepy fishing village of Taghazout, overlooking Hash Point, approximately 20km from Agadir, in the South West of Morocco.  Hash Point is one of three famous point breaks Taghazout has to offer, and it's right on our doorstep. With the infamous Anchor point within swimming distance, you literally can not get any closer to the water if you tried!

The accommodation is mix of double rooms and bunk rooms. Each floor is equipped with a bathroom, basic cooking facilities as well as satellite TV and high speed Wi-Fi. The terrace at the top of the camp has the best view in Taghazout and is a great lookout for all of the point breaks – Including Anchors!

Most people book in for the full Sunday to Sunday experience. This helps us organize your stay in Taghazout as we can structure the surf lessons (for beginner, intermediate and advanced surfers), we can ensure that you surf as many of the surf spots on the Agadir coastline, and everyone can experience the trips to places like Immouzer (paradise valley) and the Cavehouse in Tifnit. It also helps us save time booking you in and filling out everyone’s arrival forms.

Intermediate / Advanced Surfer

Taghazout is Morocco's best surf destination for a reason. Our guides will take you to every spot, show you every rock off point, and every exit that you need to try out some of the best waves in Morocco.
The coaches have been surfing all their lives, surfing is their life. They will help you with your bottom turns, your cutbacks, your floaters, every possible maneuver you need to work on. What else, well you know this thing they call localism, the local is guiding you. With Surf Berbere you get to avoid all the hassle, ride the waves that you are due, and so long as you respect the line-ups, the other surfers in the water will respect you.
If you don’t fancy lugging your board on the plane we have a pretty decent selection of short boards and fish boards for you to try out. Just make sure that you pay for a board when you make your booking and then you can test them all out. The general rule is that you are allowed to damage one board before we start making you pay for the damages! – You have been warned!

The Beginner Surfer
Morocco and Taghazout have plenty of good quality beach breaks ideal for all standards of surfing. Whether it's been a while since you've managed to get some water time or you're a complete beginner, we will find the perfect spot for your level. 80% of the people who come through the surf camp have done under two weeks of surfing and so you will not be in any on your own if you are just starting out!
We have a full range of NSP boards suitable for those who need to brush up their surfing technique as well as a full range of beginner soft-top boards for those first attempts at arguably the best sport in the world!

Surfing Equipment and Lessons
All your surfing needs are catered for.  The surf equipment is included in the prices, including board hire, wetsuit hire and surf instruction lessons.  At all times there will be two locally trained surf instructors in the water with you.  These guys have been surfing these waves their whole lives.  They have trained and completed in all the tournaments and have years of coaching experience.  Essentially you can't beat local knowledge when it comes to hunting down the perfect waves in parts of Morocco that no guide book will ever find.

Here you have the choice of selecting between Marrakech airport, Agadir airport, and the Agadir bus stop. The drop down menus will automatically attribute the following prices:

Our guys are happy to pick up day or night, and if you have paid for it then even if you are delayed, we will have someone at the right place waiting.
The next thing to point out is that if you are travelling in a group then you only need one taxi between four of you. You have to think about how much luggage you are bringing as well. They are old school Mercedez taxi’s that pick you up, so they have quite a lot of boot space, but they are not massive. We can kit the taxi out with surf board roofracks as well, so don’t worry if you have a few boards with you.

We are happy to help you get anywhere else in Morocco as well. So if you want to hire a car and head to the desert, or take the bus up to Essouirra, just let us know when you get here. Same thing applies to groups for number of taxis that you need to pay for.
If you let us know during your stay we can often buy your onward bus tickets from the station a couple of days in advance.

Double bed with breakfast
Here you have the choice, you either go for the comfort of a double bed, or a bunk bed. The double rooms are fairly basic, but a necessity for couples. The good news is that if you are a couple then only of you needs to pay for the bed. The partner not paying for the bed needs only list the group leader when they make their booking.
Nightly rate: £40
The daily rate stays the same whether you are a single person, or a couple sharing. This is a great incentive for couples coming out as they immediately make a saving on their trip. You also get your breakfast thrown in as well. This is normally served between 8am and 9am, but the camp manager will keep you posted if there is a change of plan.

Bunk bed with breakfast
You need a bed, why not go for the back to school experience, ideal for groups of three or four people that want to share a room together.

Again you get your breakfast included in this. Just tick the box and we’ll work out the cost for your stay.

Surf board hire
We don’t discriminate between long boarders and short boarders. In fact we even had a body-boarding manager! The price is the same, we have a pretty decent quiver, catering for most people’s needs. These range from big foamies, NSPs of all sizes, some fishes and a few short boards. The second you start taking the short boards out, you start taking out the staff favourites, so be sure that they come back in one piece!

Again, this is a phenomenal price, but it is only on offer for people staying at the surf camp! If you try and rent a board in town you will pay at least twice for a dinged up waterlogged plank! You have been warned!

 
Wetsuit hire
We have excel, ripcurl, billabong, adler, boys, girls, mens, ladies, xl, xxl, xs and just mediums! Unless you are going to really throw a curveball at us, or you are a group of 16 XXL’s we should have a few wetsuits that will fit you pretty well!

Another decent price and really should make you think about whether you want to lug that mouldy hole ridden thing all the way out here and back!

Dinner
Definitely a highlight of the Surf Berbere camp, dinners are normally up on the roof terrace. If you check the box you get some of the best Moroccan cuisine mixed up with some good old fashioned bbqs.

If you are not sure, and think you are going to want to eat out in town for a couple of nights then don’t worry about ticking this box. We are very flexible and as long as you let the chef know that you want to eat a few hours in advance we can book you in for some dinner pretty easily!

Guiding with lunch
Our guides are locals that have surfed the Taghazout area for years (Have a look at the video from our cousin Chris on the homepage!)! These guys know the spots, know the winds, understand the tides and more importantly know the other locals, saving you a lot of the hassle!

Coaching with lunch
If you need some help perfecting your bottom turn, or if you are a beginner; our coaches are all qualified by their respective national surfing bodies (most of ours have their brevet from the Moroccan Surf Federation), and are perfect for helping you improve your surfing. We have a ridiculous number of spots that are perfect for every level and normally we will split the groups up into the different standards and send them off to the best waves of the day!

If you have paid for the coaching you can expect our guys to get in the water with you, show you how it is done, as well as give you expert advice both in the morning and the afternoon.
We often have video sessions back at the camp, focusing in on areas that people improve their technique (as well as having a laugh at some of the best wipeouts of the day!).

We at Surf Berbere don’t want to just offer you the standard surf holiday of wake up, eat, surf the local breaks, eat again, party, sleep, 7 days, go home happy with a nice tan and an alright surfer having spent a week in a nice isolated bubble of a surf camp, without experiencing Morocco. We want you to leave here feeling like you have been on a real Surfari, and explored the cracks and crevices of the area, got a bit of a feel for the local Berbere culture and vibes.
This is why throughout the week we try to do trips taking you a little further than the average Taghazout Surf Camp.

We’ll show you the beautiful surfing and fishing village of Imesouane, with its huge crashing Cathedral’s beach break and its long mellow peeling right hander bay – perfect for beginners. We’ll take you south to Tifnit, a gem of the south Moroccan coast line. Exposed and consistent breaks with lefts and rights, this deserted beach is almost guaranteed to bring you a wave.

During those rare occasions when Poseidon and Neptune don’t smile upon us and the waves cease to exist we are not left twiddling our thumbs and practicing our Eskimo rolls. We can take you off to Immouzer or as the locals call it - Paradise Valley. The only road in the village, the friendly inhabitants and the simple houses make it clear you are off the beaten track. Chill out in tranquility and seclusion by the waterfalls and plunge pools, or take a trek through the forests – a rarity in Morocco.

How about a yoga session after a long day's surf? Our professional instructor takes sessions at our luxury apartment complex overlooking Killer Point. Or relax and treat yourself to a four handed massage at the local hammam! Want to get a few gifts for back home? We’ll take you to the Agadir Souks or if you want to see the local countryside a little more, surely the best way to do that is on a quad bike!

You will be served breakfast and dinner at the surf camp's roof terrace.  Lunch will be either barbeque or sandwiches will be served at the surf designation chosen for that day. Our Moroccan cooks have all worked in the Agadir Hotels as well as the local cafes of Taghazout.

If you like authentic Moroccan cuisine then it just doesn't get any better than what these guys prepare! If you are worried that you won't like Moroccan food then fear not as Simo is a master of the omelettes and pizza too. If anyone is interested in learning how to cook a tajine, just ask the guys for a stand in lesson and they will be more than happy to show you the ropes!

The Surf Berbere Surf Camp:
You will be staying at the exclusive and stunningly located Surf Berbere surf camp in Taghazout. The beautiful mountain backdrop is superseded by the waves crashing against the surf camp. Air temperatures are in the mid 20s Celsius year round and the water temp is perfect for your summer wetsuits!
The surf camp is one of the first camps to be set up in the Taghazout area and has the stunning roof top terrace overlooking the bay and the whole village (you only need to look on the facebook group for Surf Berbere to see how many guests have commented on it). The location is amazing, just yards away from the ocean. Finally, the set up has been honed from years of running the best surf camp in town, so our cooks, cleaners and general staff are all on hand to ensure that you have an amazing week!

Sunrise and Sunset yoga:
Our yoga session happen up at our beautifully secluded killer point apartments. Stretch out, focus your attention and optimize your surfing performance by taking rejuvenating yoga classes. If you’re new to yoga or already established in regular practice, visiting Surf Berbere is a great opportunity for you to connect mind, body and breath. Yoga teaches us to move with power, precision and fluidity; to maximize your body’s core strength, flexibility and balance.

The team:
Marloos: Marloos started her surfing career at the tender age of just 16. Since then she has been heavily involved in all areas of the surf industry, from a Quicksilver distribution representative, a Roxy tour musician and even the Dutch Roxy Girls team captain! She now teaches for one of Holland’s top surf schools and travels the world helping with community projects in less fortunate areas.

Sterre: For two years Sterre has been a BSA qualified instructor, delightfully teaching students how to surf on the shores of The Netherlands, France and Morocco. The thing she finds most rewarding about teaching is seeing her students experience the same joy that she finds herself in surfing. Playing in the ocean, needing nothing but the power of nature and being fully in touch with the elements whilst physically and mentally challenge yourself... Also Sterre is a keen yoga practitioner, complementing both her surfing and life in general.

Lucie: Our yoga teacher, Lucie, is fully certified by Yoga Alliance in 200 hour Classical Ashtanga and Hatha Yoga. With 10 years of training experience in many yogic styles, 4 years teaching experience and having lived in 2 yoga retreat centres, you are in expert hands! Lucie is a Pranayama (yogic breathing) specialist; has completed Yoga Philosophy, Meditation and Karma Yoga programmes, and has a Bachelors of Arts in Dance Studies.

Do I need a visa?
If you hold an EU passport you are entitled to visit and surf Morocco for up to 90 days without a visa. For further info on visas check out the following site www.learn4good.com/travel/morocco_visa.htm

Where should I fly into?
Agadir (AGA) is our nearest aiport and is only fifty mins away. We will pick you up and drop you off there as part of most of the packages. Check on the prices page for full listings.

Marrakech (RAK) is another option but you will need to take a bus or a taxi to get to us. The transfer from Marrakech is 100 Euros in a taxi, about 10 Euros on a coach (coach company is CTM www.CTM.ma) about 4 and half hours down.

Getting from Marrakech Airport to Surf Berbere as cheaply as possible?
You will need to go by bus, but first you need to get to the bus stop. When you get out from the airport you need to jump in a "petit taxi", basically a little red taxi. Barter for the price, if you have time and patience then go for a price of around 30-40dh (No time or patience prepare yourself to pay 50-100dh). Get the driver to take you to either the CTM or Supratours bus stations where you can get a ticket to Agadir on fairly regular buses for about 100dh.
The bus takes between four and five hours and goes through scenic mountainous terrain, but can be a little bit hairy!

What you need to know about Morocco

What is the currency?
The Moroccan currency is the Dirham (dh). There are 14.5dh to £1, and 12dh to 1EURO. You won't be able to get hold of any currency outside the country and so long as you aren't a currency speculator we are happy to change small amounts of money for you at the current market rates, both coming in and out!

What will the weather be like?
Expect sunshine year round, but cold evenings from October through to March. Warm water lasts through til November, but you will need a winter wetsuit through to March or April.

When is the surf best?
The best surf is during the winter when the big swells roll in. This is not to say that the Summer is a barren spell. The beauty of our region is that so long as there are some 5ft swells hitting the buoys, somewhere will be working. This being said it is definitely advisable to hit the winter waves if you want to see the big overheads you see in the videos.

I am a woman, is there anything I should know about visiting a Muslim country?
Morocco is one of the most tolerant Muslim countries out there. Read a guide book from ten years ago and you will be told to dress head to toe with nothing showing. This is not the case anymore. Agadir is a European tourist destination and the locals will not be shocked by much, however we would ask that all our clients respect local customs.

What you need to know about Surf Berbere

Is there internet?
We have high speed WiFi broadband internet throughout our accommodation.

Do I have to bring my board?
We will provide everything you need, but if you have your own boards then bring them all. Our region has absolutely every kind of wave so bring the boards that suit what you want to ride and according to your ability. Boards, wetsuits are all included in the full package price if you don't fancy the perilous baggage handlers. Please check carefully to see exactly what you get with the package you are paying for.

Is there anywhere to get surf repairs done?
There are lots of local surf shops that will fix any problems you may get with your boards at low cost, but high quality.

Can I drink alcohol?
Taghazout is a dry town. This means that no store will sell booze here, but that does not mean that there are no boozy parties here.
Alcohol is available in Agadir, it is nice to enjoy a drink after a good day surfing. We will go in to the supermarkets of Agadir fairly regularly if you want to pick up a crate. Please note that we are careful to respect local customs. You can also purchase duty free before departing.

What is the accommodation like?
The surf camp is on Hash Point. The apartments are in a perfect location literally on the ocean edge, comprising of  4 separate levels and a grand roof terrace taking in 180 degree views of the Atlantic Ocean. For a more luxurious option we also offer apartments at Killer Point again with fantastic ocean views enjoyed from a beach side pool.
Most of the packages listed show the prices for the beach front Taghazout apartments. If you are after something a bit special please inquire for the luxury killer point apartments, but expect a higher price.

What if I am vegetarian?
No problems! Our Moroccan Chef Youssef specialises in a variety of cuisines to ensure your stay with us is catered for your particular taste. Nothing is more refreshing at the end of a surfing day relaxing on the terrace enjoying a vegetable tagine!

If I don’t want to surf one day, what else is there to do?
There are plenty of things to see and do around this great southern region. Options include horse and camel  rides along the beach, a visit to the Immouzer waterfalls enjoying a picnic in the afternoon sun or for the more adventurous why not hire out some quad bikes and rip through the mountains with a guide.

I am a beginner, will I get lessons?
Yes (if you are on the right package - most of our packages offer this as we are here to offer our experience!) Our qualified surf instructors will share their passion for surfing with you, ensuring you gain knowledge of the sport, awareness in the water and most of all have fun whilst you are learning.
We normally have a mix between local surf coaches and European guides, but it all depends when you come out. They are all qualified by their respective associations and speak good English.
I am more advanced now but would still like a guide.
A great way to explore the region and variety of surf breaks is by hitting the road with our experienced crew, who will take you to the best waves for the day. So just jump on in and soak up the knowledge at hand.

When is the best time to come?
With a region that enjoys over 330 days of sunshine per year, Taghazout is bustling year round. The Winter swells are more consistent and it is during this time that most of the die hard surfers arrive.
We run throughout the year because there are great waves to be scored throughout the Summer. We have so many different breaks, some that pick up small swells, some that only work when there is huge pressure system coming through. You will always get some great surf, you just have to find it. That is why we are here!

Why is it called Surf Berbere?
The Berbere people are the traditional inhabitants of the Maghreb region in North Africa. These guys have been living here for centuries in fishing villages, and in recent decades surfing the local beaches. The Berber name originates from the Roman occupation here, after battling the locals they were called Barbarians as they had a fierce reputation amongst the armies.

Flights into Agadir
If you fly into Agadir a driver will be waiting for you to transfer you to the surfcamp. Check out www.airninja.com for some flight info on who flies out here !
Ryanair are flying direct to Agadir in the Winter, so from about September through to March, your London Stanstead cheeky trips to the sun are easy and cheap as chips. We have had people get their return flights from £10, so always try and book your flights in advance and make sure that we have availability.

Flights into Marrakech
If you fly into Marrakech we will arrange a transfer for you, the drive is 4 and a half hours from Marrakech through the Atlas mountains, it is quite a breathtaking journey, an additonal charge of 100 Euros for a taxi, or 10 Euros on a coach (coach company is CTM www.CTM.ma) is applied. This is the thing to do if you have exhausted all the avenues on flying directly to Agadir, and it is often cheaper (ryanair, easyjet and atlas-blue all fly direct from London)
